Client Blog: Ian’s Norwegian fjords cruise

As this was my first ever cruise, I wanted to tick something off my bucket list - and the Norwegian fjords delivered. At the time, nowhere else really appealed to me, but now I’ve experienced my first solo cruise... who knows where I’ll go next?
I arrived at Southampton docks (Berth 46) around 2pm and, by 3pm, I was in my cabin and unpacked. The check-in and security process were an absolute breeze compared to Manchester Airport, where I usually travel from - simple, efficient and hassle-free.
My cabin on board Britannia was just right. I’d booked one with a balcony, and it had everything I needed: a simple bathroom with a shower, a comfy double bed, TV, a kettle for making a brew whenever I fancied one, and a fridge.

It was lovely to come back to after a busy day, put the kettle on, sit on the balcony with my book and just soak in the views.
The ship itself is a big one, with room for over 3,600 passengers, but it felt clean, well-organised and stylish throughout.
I mainly ate in the Horizon buffet – it had loads of variety at every meal and suited me perfectly.
As I was travelling solo, I didn’t try any of the extra-cost speciality restaurants, but I spoke to several other guests who did, and they had nothing but praise for them.

Evening entertainment was great – singers, piano players, magicians, comedians and even a cinema. There really was something for everyone. Shopping on board was fairly limited but covered the basics - a duty-free shop plus souvenirs, snacks, watches and a clothing store.
I don’t drink, but I still enjoyed spending a couple of hours in Brodies Bar with a cranberry juice, watching the football. There are at least eight bars on board and plenty of lively spots for those who fancy something a bit more upbeat.
The fjords themselves? Absolutely stunning - even more breathtaking than I’d expected. Sitting out on the balcony while we cruised through this incredible scenery was a highlight.
In Olden, I booked an excursion called ‘Fjord to Sky in 5’ - exactly what it says on the can. A cable car takes you up 3,316 feet in just five minutes. When we reached the top, we were greeted by thick snow and amazing views. I’d love to do it again on a clear day - but even in the clouds, it was unforgettable.

[And when we left Olden... Let’s just say there’s a lovely surprise in store. No spoilers – just enjoy it for yourself!]
The rest of the time, I spent exploring in my walking boots with my camera over my shoulder, taking in the views and that fresh, crisp air. It’s a beautiful part of the world, and one I’d love to return to.
What really struck me was the relaxed atmosphere on board. For a first-time cruiser travelling solo, it was ideal - there were informal solo meetups and daily activities, so it was easy to connect with others or just enjoy time on your own. You can dip in and out as much as you want.
This whole experience was organised for me by Amanda, who’s been arranging my travels for around ten years now. She knows exactly what I like (and just as importantly, what I don’t!) and never lets me down. I’d fully recommend getting in touch with her if you’re planning your own dream trip or looking to tick something off your list.
So now the big question... do I return to the fjords, or try the Mediterranean next?
Ian
