I’ve always loved being near the water - whether it’s riverside walks or getting out on the water itself – but I’ve never actually been on a river cruise. So, this next chapter is something completely new for me… and I’m excited to take you along for the journey.

I’ve recently signed up to become a Designer Travel River Cruise Expert, which means I’ll be doing training with lots of different river cruise lines over the coming months.

Even better – I’ll be heading off on my very first river cruise this September with Riviera Travel, sailing along the Douro in Portugal on the lovely-looking Riviera Rose.

As part of the process, I’ll be sharing top tips, honest insights, and maybe even the odd tempting offer! But to start with, I wanted to bust a few of the common myths I hear from people - and that I’ll admit, I’ve believed myself at times…

Six river cruise myths - and why they’re not true

1) Seasickness

This was a big one for me, but it turns out river cruising is nothing like the sea - the ships move slowly and the water is calm, so seasickness is rare.

2) Formal dining

Forget set times and stuffy dinners - it’s totally relaxed. You can sit with others or choose your own table. No pressure.

3) Tiny cabins

All cabins have windows - and many have French or full balconies so you can take in the views as you sail.

4) Dress codes

There’s no formal dress requirement. If you want to dress up, go for it. If not, that’s fine too.

5) It’s expensive

Actually, river cruises can be really good value. Most include your flights, transfers, excursions, meals, drinks and more. And with no hidden extras, you know exactly what you’re spending.

6) Excursions are compulsory

Not at all - if you want to do your own thing, you can. Most ships dock right in the heart of a city or town, making it easy to explore at your own pace.

Over the next few months, I’ll be delving deeper into the world of river cruising - from the ships and the rivers they sail, to the cruise lines offering them, starting with Riviera.

I’ll also be highlighting the little details that can make a big difference for UK travellers, including:

  • Local airport flights or Eurostar travel

  • Solo traveller-friendly cruises

  • Christmas market itineraries

  • Pre and post-cruise hotel stays

  • Bikes on board for exploring at your own pace

  • And even back-to-back cruises if one just isn’t enough!

If river cruising has ever been on your radar (or even if it hasn’t!), a 4-night taster cruise is a brilliant way to try it out. Feel free to message me for more info - I’d love to help you find one that fits.
